EndNote allows users to insert literature identifiers like DOI, ISBN, ISSN, PMCID, and PMID directly into specific reference fields. This functionality is readily available within the software. DOI and ISBN entries are most relevant within the DOI and ISBN fields in each reference record. Ensure the identifier is entered in its correct, full format without any labels or prefixes. EndNote automatically indexes identifiers added to their designated fields, enabling powerful features such as deduplication and library-wide searching. The indexing also facilitates seamless linking to external resources when using appropriate output styles. Entering identifiers accurately is essential for reliability. To insert an identifier, open the reference in the EndNote library. Navigate to the specific field designed for the identifier, such as "DOI" or "ISBN". Paste or type the complete identifier value directly into that field and save the reference. Verify correct insertion by using EndNote's Search References (Ctrl+F) function or inspecting the reference details view. Linking to full text often occurs automatically if preferences are set accordingly. Many databases also allow direct import of references with their identifiers intact.
