How to add attachments to references in EndNote?
EndNote facilitates linking digital attachments, such as full-text PDFs, to bibliographic references, effectively creating a centralized digital library. Attachments are stored separately and linked via the EndNote library file.
Attaching files involves using the 'File Attachments' field within the reference editor or dragging files directly onto an open reference. This links the file path to the reference; the original document remains in its storage location, ensuring library portability. Attachments are typically stored in the .Data folder alongside the library by default. PDFs are commonly attached for full-text access, though other formats (e.g., Word documents, images) are also supported. Using EndNote's 'Find Full Text' feature can automate attaching eligible PDFs.
To attach a file manually, open the target reference in EndNote. Either drag the file onto the reference window or click the paperclip icon ('File Attachments' field) and select 'Attach File' to navigate to the desired document. Verify the file path appears correctly in the field. This integration allows rapid access to full-text content directly from the EndNote reference during literature management, research, and manuscript writing within Word, significantly enhancing workflow efficiency.
