Is the open access model of the journal suitable for all researchers?

The open access publishing model is not universally suitable for all researchers due to significant disparities in funding capacity. While it enhances visibility and accessibility of research findings, its applicability is constrained by the researcher's ability to cover associated Article Processing Charges (APCs). Crucially, the feasibility depends on several factors: availability of dedicated research grants or institutional funds to pay APCs, which varies considerably across institutions and countries; the disciplinary norms regarding preferred publication venues; the career stage of the researcher; and the prevalence of reputable OA options within their specific field. Researchers must also carefully evaluate journals to avoid predatory publishers. The suitability is highest where funding mechanisms exist or within disciplines where OA mandates and funding are well-established. Therefore, researchers should strategically assess the alignment of OA publication with their specific project budget, funding sources, career objectives, disciplinary expectations, and the prestige of the target journal. The model offers immense societal value through wider dissemination, but its personal suitability requires pragmatic consideration of financial resources and publication strategy.
