Mendeley facilitates the automatic classification of literature primarily through its rule-based Smart Filters feature. This allows users to automatically sort newly added documents into designated folders based on metadata criteria. Effective automated classification hinges on two key elements: consistent and quality metadata for imported documents (especially titles, authors, keywords, publication years), and the user-defined rules defining the sorting logic. Users create folders and then establish filters using rules like "Title Contains [Keyword]" or "Keywords Contain [Term]". Documents matching these rules are automatically moved to the corresponding folder upon import. However, automatic classification accuracy depends heavily on the completeness and accuracy of the document's metadata; poorly indexed entries might not be captured correctly. Rules are primarily applied during the initial import process. To implement, first create the specific subfolders within your Mendeley library where documents should be sorted. For each folder, right-click and select "Create Smart Filter". Define the classification rules using available metadata fields – typically title, author, keywords, year, or tags – combined with operators like "contains," "is," or "starts with". Save the Smart Filter. Subsequently, documents imported or added to your main library matching any rule will be automatically moved to the respective Smart Filter folder. Regularly verify classifications and refine rules as needed.
